It’s an emotional time for me. The publication of my book is just five weeks away. Writing it was intense; it is deeply personal, and in my labors to describe my experiences and insights, I relived much of my life. Joy, pain, fear, triumph, love—all of it. Soon it will be there for anyone and everyone to read, an open door, secret spaces exposed. That fact stirs up many emotions for me. They’re difficult to parse.
In an effort to do so, I’ve been making my way through TED Talks on the topic of books. That’s how I came across my selection for today, Mac Barnett‘s “Why a good book is a secret door.” I’m very glad that I did.

I love Barnett’s wandering Talk. It’s about how art occupies a reality somewhere between truth and lies, and how we can, too. It’s about the wonder of children. It’s about creativity, and humor, and imagination. It’s about an author of children’s fiction, and his love for his work and his audience. It’s heavy and hilarious, whimsical and worthwhile, fun and forceful.
Barnett weaves his way through it all in a way that doesn’t make sense as much as it feels right. It hit home for me; listening to his story heightened my excitement and calmed my anxiety over publication day. That might not make much sense, I know. But it felt right.
